The Nesting Oak

There is more to tell about this one than most.

The Nesting Oak is a single board, taken from one Clyde Valley oak that stood the best part of two centuries at the edge of field and wood. There will never be another like it. The branch mark at its heart, the silver run of the grain, the line of the live edge: all of it the tree's own doing, and all of it belonging to this piece alone.

I will tell you plainly: a board like this is not made to be put away. It is made to be used and made to be kept. To carry the bread and the cheese, the supper and the celebration, and to gather a few marks of its own along the way, until the day it passes to whoever comes after. That is what an heirloom is. A thing that outlives the buying of it.

It comes home with its own signed Record of Provenance, the full story of the tree, set down and dated the day it goes to its keeper, with simple care instructions to see it safely through the years to come.

I would not say this of every piece. But this is one I would keep for myself.
